Pepper Stands Alone by Wulfsbane Pepper Stands Alone by Wulfsbane
I’m really cutting it kind of close submitting this entry on the actual due date. I never wanted to try for the Pepper Project at first, but after a while I had a change of heart. Unfortunately time was running short, so I had to simplify my techniques and make do without some of my original plans; namely to use a full set of colours and including a gun totting Wanda. I felt the least I could do was use Pepper’s fav colour as accents. I just hope I finished this in time, but if not it’s cool. At least I enjoyed making it. Listened to Ghost in the Shell OST for inspiration.

The Ducati 1098 was the reference for Pepper’s bike design. Brushes used were from Goro’s and concept by mac (haven't found the link yet).

Have to thank ~frostbain for being my extra eyes for this one and pointing out what needs work. Thanks, Paul!

Pepper is a copyright of *Artgerm and Imaginary Friends.

Edit: Larger, sharper, better.

This is hands down one of the sickest pieces of art I have seen in a long time... just the simple kiss of color in the red sets it off. I love it... it makes me want to go get out my sketchbook right now lol.

oh shit :wow: say wonderful is an offence! I love everything of this...the black-grey atmosphere, the details in red and the landscape blurried...especially the lights, beautiful. The bike seems have owns eyes, and the reflection of the water is a great touch :)

I'm glad to hear they worked :) I was apprehensive about adding the reddish accents out of fear they might look overboard.

I really like how you made Pepper 'cool', instead of the 'sexy' all other contest entries I've seen have gone for. She's still 'attractive', but much more...respectable this way. The design of the bike, and the choice of colors (so much variety of darks!) are really cool too.

Thank you, that's very encouraging  When it comes to drawing women I prefer to give them the same feel as I would draw most men; only hinting at sexy, never over expose it.

I couldn't have done it without a good reference, really. I had a specific angle in mind for it so I googled for something similar to copy from. The major difference was the lighting which I had to work out on my own.

The top left still tends to pull my eye a bit much. The eye-path (line of action seems like the wrong term for some reason) is kind of a sweeping curve because of it though - from the top left, to the swords shine, to the front of the bike, to the headlights, to the wheel - so I think it still works pretty well :). Reads well for people that naturally start at the top left too, so it kind of killed two birds with one stone - the path just follows more or less the reverse of the initial intention :P.
The slightly darker shade of the tire fades the path's line off well too, kind of easing the viewer off the page to the bottom right.

Turned out well :D.

Y'know this is reminding me of what other artists did reversing the basic painting formulas; like using cool colours in the forground while the background is of warm tones. Normally it's the other way around but it actually works for most pictures. Still, I haven't seen anyone using a reverse of the usual eye paths, which it should've started at the bottom according the books :P

This pic really has become a thing about compromises it seems. By the way your suggestions were really sound advice but somehow my instincts wanted me to keep a few things intact concerning the background. For example, if I were to darken that white corner it would make the subject appear somewhat more centered when looked at a glance. I'd also lose the silhouette of the character and the hair which I kinda liked, plus gone will be the atmosphere of an alley way which I felt was essential for the noiresque feel I wanted to get. I think if I hadn't already added that much detail when I showed you before, things would've really been different and more by the book
