Artist's Comments

I chose to draw Gandalf not only because he's my personal favourite character in the Lord of the Rings movie, but I wanted to challenge myself to draw this particular portrait, and see how far I can make it. I guess I'm okay with this for now, but I'll probably work in a bit more of the highlights later (noticed a few parts were lacking something after I transferred this on screen). For now it's time to move on, got commissions waiting.

10-12 hours between 4 days. 8 x 11 inches on a 150gsm sketchbook. Obviously a reference was used :P I actually started this almost immediately after posting that Iron Man sketch.

Rendered with 8b, 6b and 4b wooden pencils. A tissue paper for blending. A 4b (0.5mm) mechanical pencil for the detailing, a kneaded eraser for value control and a regular eraser cut into small triangles for the highlights (I pretty much drew the hair and beard with it). Contrast was increased a bit in Photoshop CS.

I'm still new at this, so crits are welcome :)

I could imagine the beard giving you trouble.

Sexuality is fluid, you just go with the flow.

Haha, oh yes. Just imagine how it was like in my head the whole time I was drawing him. I practically quoted everything he said in the movie :dead:

Thank you :) I wouldn't say it was the hardest thing I've ever had to render, but it was the only part that I frequently lost focus with (so I had to improvise).

You are so damn inspiring Shahir. =(

Impulse comment aside, I'd like to add why this is so wonderful. We've seen pencil artists around here who do pretty good work, some of it mind-blowing. I don't care if I'm biased or not, but this work shows you know how to use your tools and aren't afraid of the outcome.

I'm so tired of this super smudged, over-polished stuff lately. Like an airbrushed maxim cover.

The grain, she shading detail, everything you've done here, regardless if it is refed or not, shows personality. It still has you written all over it.

I just noticed something. You have super powers. That is so cool. Can you fly?

Not a particular fan of the movie, but this is a really nice draw :)

Which Lopan? The 10' foot tall road block? Or the little basket case on wheels?
